Diabetes is a chronic condition. Treating such a complex condition that requires big changes in lifestyle and knowing that not making these changes can lead to complications can lead to great amounts of stress. Conversely, having stress makes taking care of diabetes much more difficult because it increases sugar levels. Helping patients accept their diabetes and helping them get over the obstacles that might be sabotaging their treatment can lead to great personal growth and to a feeling of controlling the situation, rather than the diabetes controlling the patient. A psychotherapist can give the patient the right tools to achieve this goal.
Ernessa Bergman is the center’s psychotherapist.
